This special category hotel is located in the Sultanhamet district, in the Old Town, just behind St. Sophia Mosque and Topkapi Palace, off one of Sultanhamet's main roads. A tram station is two minutes away. Taksim Square, the modern part of Istanbul, and home to all the top brand shops and nightlife, is just 10 minutes away by taxi. This hotel was originally built as an Ottoman school and hospital in the mid 1800's, and then renovated into a hotel in the summer of 2005. The rooms are a good size and really comfortable. Decorated with tasteful and expensive materials to give a pleasant feeling.Rooms area measuring 18 - 20 Square Metre. All rooms has private bathrooms with shower, heating and cooling air conditioning, satellite television with major European channels and direct dial telephone. There is also minibar. The bathrooms, again, are a good size and have all the necessary facilities to provide a fantastic stay. There are two restaurants. The Matbah, which combines fine dining (Ottoman Cuisine) with stunning views of the Caferaga Medrese, the 16th century handicraft centre. This restaurant offers a menu of innovative Turkish and Istanbul cuisine. The other restaurant is in the garden/patio, and normally serves a buffet menu of international and Turkish specialities. Being an old Ottoman school, the building is very nice, painted in bright, light colours, with the typical characteristics of 19th century architecture. The lobby is medium-sized but quite big for a special category hotel. It has a small waiting area and adjoins the garden/patio and coffee shop. It is decorated in a dark wooden style combined with continual Turkish decorative touches. For location, rooms, facilities and service, this is perhaps one of the best special category hotels in Sultanhamet. We highly recommend it. (03/09 JMG)
